You're right. People are very worried about whether they can put food on the table. This is how it all started in the Middle East. People couldn't make ends meet. They did not have time for politics. but look what eventually happened.

Mr. Arar:
I agree. The problem is that the economy will likely overshadow everything, especially if the EU,and Euro, continues its descent into chaos.

I'm afraid it doesn't affect enough people to become a national issue. Perhaps our time could be better spent leaning on our representatives in Congress to finish their work on revising the State Secrets Privilege law? Just a thought.

How about trying to work to make of this injustice an issue during the election campaign? it is hard but not impossible.

Mr. Fisher:
There are plenty of us that agree this an outrage. The problem is what to do about it. How can we stop this kind of thing?

Prism readers: I know we're all busy with the details of our own lives. But all it takes for the bad guys to win is a few good men saying nothing. So where is the outrage?

Let me hear from at least one Prism reader. Please.

Maher, I am not certain that the situation has grown worse; however, the perpetrators have become a much bolder. For most of the twentieth century, the Liberal Party governed Canada. Yet, this period saw many blatant abuses of human rights vis-a-vis First Nations, Japanese Canadians et al. It was (and perhaps, still is) common to hear that racism doesn't exist here. A honest reading of history reveals this to be simply untrue. Historically, Canada has been for whites I think that the ratification of the Charter made the situation better for a while. Since 9/11, there has been significant backsliding, which has been instigated by a group of moneyed, mostly white, mostly protestant, mostly male individuals who long for Canada as they believe it used to be. I think what has changed is that the people are not as white as they used to be and that there has been an evolution in the thinking of many people, who have come to reject systemic racism, sexism and ethnic discrimination as acceptable practices.

Don't get me wrong. The increasing militarism, corporatism and blatant public abuses of human rights in Canada are frightening developments. So yes, it has gotten worse. The point I attempting to make, however, is that it is mistake to look back to a idyllic Canada that existed sometime before 9/11. It is a fantasy that never existed except in the hearts and minds of some exceptional people.

I will also add Alberto Mora, former general counsel to the United States Navy, who is his position strongly opposed the torture (his words) applied to detainees at Guantanamo and in US custody throughout the world.

I would add to the list of US citizens who stood up and spoke out against the methods used during the US War on Terror Major General Thomas Romig and his fellow US Army Judge Advocate General (JAG) Officers who opposed the uses of torture.
