Afghan Detainee Hearings Testimony Live on Prism TV

. Published on June 11, 2010

On June 14 and 15, Prism will be broadcasting the ongoing Afghan Detainee hearings from Ottawa.

The purpose of these hearings is to probe allegations regarding Afghan prisoners who were captured by Canadian troops and handed over to the Afghan authorities, who are alleged to have then tortured or otherwise seriously mistreated some prisoners. The hearings will also investigate to what extent Canadian military, diplomatic, or government personnel were aware of any mistreatment or torture of detainees by the Afghan authorities.

As a service to our viewers, we offer you the opportunity to watch the proceedings live at Prism LiveTV, streaming live on the Prism Magazine web site. In the event the web site becomes sluggish, due to increased traffic, you can watch the hearings here. The schedule for the two days of coverage can be found below:

Monday June 14, 9:00 EDT: Ms Gabrielle Duschner will be testifying on June 14th (all day).  She worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), where her position was Political Advisor, J9.

Tuesday June 15, 9:00 EDT: Nicholas Gosselin will be testifying on June 15th (which will conclude his previous April 14, 2010 testimony). In his position as Human Rights Officer with DFAIT, Mr. Gosselin discovered and reported implements of torture in an Afghan prison in late 2007.  His reports, combined with other reports of detainee abuse  by Afghan authorities prompted Ottawa to halt detainee transfers for a brief period in November 2007.

It is also very important to censure the government for its treatment of Richard Colvin and its failure to investige his concerns. Instead they did everything to discredit him, thus tending to cast a freeze on any whistleblowers. Mr Colvin's courage should be recognized.
