The documentary “Ghosts” will be screening at the Ottawa Public Library on the 26th of April (next Monday), followed by a Parliament Hill screening on the 3rd of May.
“Ghosts”, which won the Public Choice Award at the Montréal Human Rights Film Festival last March, focuses on the lives and cases of Abdullah Almalki, Ahmad El Maati and Muayyed Nureddin, who spent months and years in Syrian and Egyptian custody. During their time in custody they were subjected to intense torture.
Upon their return to Canada they struggled to find out the role of the Canadian government in their detention and torture. After pressure from the U.N the Iacobucci Inquiry was struck to investigate the role of Canadian agencies in their cases. The report concluded that the RCMP, CSIS and DFAIT were indeed complicit in the men’s detention and torture. However, the men have not yet received any apology from the government. The film is also a portrayal of the effects of torture psychologically/physically as well on a social scale.
The Ottawa Public Library screening on April 26 is sponsored by Amnesty International and Nowar-Paix.
