Amnesty International Canada AGM: April 24th

. Published on April 23, 2010

Amnesty International Canada will be holding their Annual General Meeting April 24th in Montreal at McGill University, and Prism Magazine will be providing live coverage of portions of the event.

Under the theme “Canada and Human Rights: We Can Do Better!” the AGM challenges the nation to find common solutions to turn around the decline of Canada’s human rights record. Corporate social responsibility, Canada on the international scene, and the protection of Canadian citizens here and abroad, will be the three key themes.

Amongst the experts in human rights that will attend the event will be Marie-Bernard Meunier, ex-ambassador to the UN in The Hague, Peter Leuprecht, formerly Director of Human Rights at the Council of Europe and Special Representative for Human Rights in Cambodia, Alain Denault, Quebec writer of “Noir Canada” and philosopher, Dan McTeague, Liberal MP of Pickering-Scarborough East and many more.  You also have a chance to hear Maher Arar, former prisoner of conscience and torture victim in Syria who will also be part of this event on Sunday morning at 9:00 am within a panel about the protection of Canadian citizens here and abroad (streamed live on Prism TV).

You won’t want to miss award-winning investigative journalist Amy Goodman on Saturday April 24th for a public lecture at 7:30 pm  on the topic of  the role of independent media in promoting social justice (streamed live on Prism TV for your convenience …), followed by a book signing of her  bestselling book, “Breaking the Sound Barrier”.
