The Symposium on Counter-Terrorism and Civil Liberties is the unprecedented collaborative effort of several groups at McGill’s Faculty of Law, including the Human Rights Working Group, the Muslim Law Students Association, the Comparative Constitutional Law Society, the Arab Law Students Association and the Center for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism.
Since 9/11 Western democracies have responded to terrorism threats with varying degrees of effectiveness and compliance with human rights standards. Canada is among the many countries faced with the challenge of balancing Charter rights with effective stringent anti-terrorism protections. The Symposium on Counter-Terrorism and Civil Liberties gathers leading policy makers, lawyers, academics, emerging scholars and students to engage in the ongoing public policy debates improving our response to the current environment.
Recent jurisprudential developments in counter-terrorism cases and legislative initiatives suggest our country is at a crossroads when it comes to determining how to correct current shortcomings. We believe it is a timely occasion to critically revisit the tenets behind counter-terrorism action and, most importantly, create an interdisciplinary forum for scholars, jurists, politicians and members of the civil society of different political allegiance to exchange on the future of those decisions taken in our name.
